An eight by 11 bubble mailer with a suspicious liquid stain raised attention and response from the U.S. Postal Service Inspection service today.
Postal service personnel were isolated and contained while the inspection and identification of the substance was conducted. Machines designed to be used by the postal service inspection personnel to identify hazardous substances were not sophisticated enough to determine whether the substance was hazardous or not.
The Des Moines Hazardous Materials team was then called and arrived on scene around 3 p.m. to sample the substance using radiological and vapor checks, among other forms of technology. The team reported the substance was non-hazardous at 5:00 pm. The U.S. Postal Inspection and Ames Police are conducting a criminal investigation of the sender of the package.
