Independence Day 2008, like July 4, 1826 and July 4, 1831, will long be remembered as a special day in the history of American independence. On the Fourth of July in 1826, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, Founding Fathers and presidents, both died. On the Fourth of July in 1831 James Monroe, primary author of the Constitution died.

A quick fix is never perfect. But some quick fixes are less perfect than others.
Example: In order to decrease oil prices, Sen. John Warner has proposed a national speed limit of 55 or 60 miles per hour, similar to the one imposed in 1974.
According to Warner, the last national limit saved 167,000 barrels of gas per day.

According to Slate.com, roughly 600 Starbucks nationwide will soon be closing. As Americans, the workaholics we are, we depend on coffee for not only sanity, but for survival. Many of you may be wondering how, as a nation, we will endure this magnificent loss.

How do I write about five weeks in Mexico, 13 Western Illinois University students and many fabulous people and experiences we will never forget? Thirteen students, including myself, flew out of O'Hare International Airport for Guadalajara on June 14 and returned on July18.

A recent television recording showing Jesse Jackson making obscene comments in regard to democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has created much controversy. Jackson's words, ironically, were not as clear-cut as he anticipated, though. The reverend, in a statement pointed at Obama, said that he wanted to "cut his nuts off.

I recently wrote a column concerning rising gas prices in America ("Polar bears, oil: American greed needs to be restrained by people," June 17). Due to the amount of feedback, both good and bad, I am writing a follow up to provide factual content to back up my piece.

If you turned on TV news early last week, it would have been difficult for you not to hear about the now-infamous cover of July 21 issue of The New Yorker magazine.
Odds are good, too, that you heard pundits denounce the cover as tasteless, offensive and possibly racist.

When a female reporter from the Los Angeles Times asked Sen. John McCain why many health-insurance plans cover Viagra but not contraceptives, even his many years of interview experience seemed unable to lead him to an answer. The presumptive Republican nominee could not recall how he voted on the subject - a mystery soon solved by his questioner: He voted against it.

This week, I decided it was time to come out of my cave and get a tan. I used the word "cave" for two reasons: First, due to the hours of my job, I hardly see the 10-2 sun that is the best for catching skin-darkening rays. The second is that I have somewhat of a hairy chest - and by somewhat, I mean it is like that of a caveman.

Iowans, it must be said, enjoy much the same nationwide reputation as their neighbors to the north: nice people. How jarring, then, to witness one of our own behaving like a witless boor while disrupting, arguably, one of the most important congressional hearings in recent history.

I get bored easily. Worse, I find procrastination to be a vivifying centerpiece in my life. So when things need to get done, I end up practicing a kind of self-schadenfreude regarding my future.
Yes, my life is quite glamorous.
And wouldn't you know that my dastardly editor, Jeff Hall, wants me to write about local things.

With the UI Museum of Art having faced so much destruction in the flood, the best move it can make is to move.
Relocating the museum would ensure that it comes back even better than the wonderful place it has been. The new museum would be refined and revamped. It would stand as our triumph in the face of the flood. Hopefully, lengthy discussions and evaluations can be avoided - because the community, the Arts School, and the UI need the museum back.

When presidential election time rolls around, the buzz is near-constant. The intensity only grows as time brings us closer and closer to that most pivotal of votes, the decider of the president of the United States. I personally have never really had much faith in our system.
